Emergency shelters are first come first serve and you must present documentation, proof of income and a valid id. You must show proof that you live in the county. Also, there is security that will check your bags, if you can’t consent to the inspection then you can not enter the emergency shelter building.

If you are experiencing homelessness and require emergency shelter dial 211 for the New Jersey area. You can dial 311 or call 1-(212)-639-9675 for the New York area. For New York, you can also contact the Department of Homeland for individual shelters. If you require immediate emergency shelter there is an Adult Family Intake Facility Center called AFIC located at 400-430 East 30 Street New York, NY 10016 or call telephone number 1 (212) 361-7900. You need to inform them that you need emergency shelter. They will ask you several questions regarding your situation and they will help you find a room for you to stay equipped with a bed and bath. If you are experiencing homelessness, out on the streets or subway, you can seek help at 24 hours open drop-in centers, most drop-in centers offer only desk and chair (no beds). These drop-in centers may offer services such as hot meals, shower rooms and laundry. Drop-in centers help to remove barriers that may be keeping you from taking the first step toward transitional and permanent housing.
At drop-in centers, you can access specialized services that meet your immediate needs such as:
Hot meals and clothing
Showers and laundry facilities
Counseling, case management services, and connections to health care, including medical care and mental health care
Help finding a job or applying for benefits
On-site staff can also work closely with you to help you transition off the streets if you choose to do so.
You can drop in at any time. All centers are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. You have every right to access services regardless of immigration status.
